Blue Networks and Technology would like to warn our clients of the potential threat of fake antivirus and security centre programs. We have experienced a very high number of infections over the past 3 months that appears to have peaked over the last week. As a result we would to provide our service agreement clients with information that they should provide to all staff as guidance in avoiding infection.

FAQ: Why can I get these virus and mailware programs when I have antivirus?

The majority of our clients are protected by Symantec Antivirus, Trend Antivirus or CA antivirus. The fake antivirus software has been known to compromise all of these products (as well as other leading av programs). The reason for this is that antivirus programs depend on “signature” or “definition” files that contain information on how to detect these programs. Unfortunately the writers of these malicious programs continually change the traits of their software to avoid detection. The result is that there is a delay in the antivirus programs being able to detect the new versions of the malicious programs.

What can I do to avoid the chances of getting infected?

All of these programs pop up warning or status messages that look legitimate. It is imperative that you do not acknowledge or click on any part of the message screen (even the x) as it can trigger the infection of your machine. You should only get messages from the Microsoft Security Centre or the brand of your antivirus (e.g. Symantec). If you are unsure of the source of the message do not click on any part of it or acknowledge it. Instead close the programs that you know are legitimate (Outlook, Word etc) and restart your machine.

When your machine restarts check to ensure that your antivirus program is active in your system tray and that it has the green dot (Symantec) or shows as online (Trend). If any popups appear then this is also suspicious. Other signs of infection include being unable to launch programs or your Internet Explorer homepage changing, or being unable to browse the internet.

If you are unsure, call the Blue Service desk on 92012340.

What is your response procedure?

Blue focuses on containment as a first rule to ensure that no other machines can be infected. Our response will be immediate and is as follows:

1. Client is directed to disconnect their computer from the network.

2. The server is checked for viruses and the central antivirus console checked to ensure all machines are reported as being clean.

3. Engineer will attempt to determine if the machine is infected.

4. If a machine is infected then the client is given the option of an engineer coming on site or couriering the machine to our offices.

Note that the virus removal process can be extremely time consuming as each scan of the machine can take an hour or more to complete. For this reason it is typically more cost effective for us to clean the machine whilst it is in our office (as we can do other things whilst the scans are running). We then have an official checklist and process for cleaning the machine. This process can take as much as 3 hours to complete.

If we think that the machine may not be cleanable then we will provide you with the option of possibly rebuilding or replacing the PC (if it is old) after 60-90 minutes of work, due to the labour cost. For this reason any installation media for the PC should be sent in with the machine if it is being couriered to our office.

How does the virus spread?

The viruses can spread through email, flash / thumb drives, external hard drives or via the network. The most common form of infection to date has been by clients browsing foreign web sites then the web site launches another browser window which looks like a legitimate antivirus or Microsoft program or alert. Clicking on the program windows then infects your computer.

Below is the standard response from Microsoft with regards to these programs. We have also included some extra examples of what the screen messages look like (as you will see they are very convincing).

Exert from Microsoft

“Watch out for fake virus alerts” Rogue security software, also known as “scareware,” is software that appears to be beneficial from a security perspective but provides limited or no security, generates erroneous or misleading alerts, or attempts to lure users into participating in fraudulent transactions.

How does rogue security software get on my computer?

Rogue security software designers create legitimate looking pop-up windows that advertise security update software. These windows might appear on your screen while you surf the web. The “updates” or “alerts” in the pop-up windows call for you to take some sort of action, such as clicking to install the software, accept recommended updates, or remove unwanted viruses or spyware. When you click, the rogue security software downloads to your computer. Rogue security software might also appear in the list of search results when you are searching for trustworthy antispyware software, so it is important to protect your computer.

What does rogue security software do?

Rogue security software might report a virus, even though your computer is actually clean. The software might also fail to report viruses when your computer is infected. Inversely, sometimes, when you download rogue security software, it will install a virus or other malicious software on your computer so that the software has something to detect.

Some rogue security software might also:

· Lure you into a fraudulent transaction (for example, upgrading to a non-existent paid version of a program).

· Use social engineering to steal your personal information.

· Install malware that can go undetected as it steals your data.

· Launch pop-up windows with false or misleading alerts.

· Slow your computer or corrupt files.

· Disable Windows updates or disable updates to legitimate antivirus software.

· Prevent you from visiting antivirus vendor websites.

· Rogue security software might also attempt to spoof the Microsoft security update process.

Here’s an example of rogue security software that’s disguised as a Microsoft alert but that doesn’t come from Microsoft.

Example of a warning from a rogue security program known as AntivirusXP. For more information about this threat, including analysis, prevention and recovery, see the Trojan:Win32/Antivirusxp entry in the Microsoft Malware Protection Center encyclopedia.

Here is the legitimate Microsoft Windows Security Center:
